EACH STUDENT HAS A ONCE-A-WEEK, FORTY-MINUTE LIBRARY CLASS IN WHICH THEY SELECT BOOKS, HEAR BOOK TALKS, DO PROJECTS CONNECTED TO LITERATURE, WORK ON ASSIGNMENTS FROM OTHER TEACHERS, ETC. Students are expected to behave in a polite, courteous manner, using their library time for learning and developing such skills as vocabulary, report writing, good search techniques, cooperative work habits, and exposure to a broad range of cultures, ideas, good physical and mental goals, and a recognition of the global atmosphere in which they live more and more each day. STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO CHECK OUT: K-GR.3 TWO BOOKS PER WEEK GR.4-8 THREE BOOKS PER WEEK +REPORT MATERIAL TEACHERS: AS MUCH MATERIAL AS MAY BE NEEDED FOR AS LONG AS NECESSARY. FINES: 1 CENT PER DAY FOR OVERDUE BOOKS. ALL FINES AND LOST BOOKS MUST BE PAID AT YEAR’S END FOR STUDENT TO RECEIVE FINAL REPORT CARD AND PROMOTION. The library has over 12,000 items including fiction, non-fiction, reference, study prints, etc., plus student stations where they may search the collection for the items they need. “T” before a title means it is on the staffs’ shelves. “PRI” means the item is suitable for Primary students. “Prbk” means the item is a soft-cover or paperback book. “REF” means the item is on the reference shelf . For ease in locating some books, SERIES books are usually shelved separately, on top of regular shelves The ACCELERATED READER PROGRAM has over 2,200 titles (with duplicates for favorites!) and the reading levels range from K-Gr.8 so there is never a lack of material for any reader! There are copies of the list in the library for the student to look up a selection. LIBRARY AIDES ARE SELECTED FROM VARIOUS GRADES TO HELP CHECK OUT, SHELF, DECORATE, ETC. IN THE LIBRARY. Behavior, work ethic, ability to deal with people and personal values are all considered when selections are made. Since there is training involved to be able to complete these tasks accurately and efficiently, we do not select too many students, and they remain in the program from their selection in Grade 5 through Grade 8. Please do not feel your child was not qualified – there are only places for a few at each grade level. From time to time we ask students to do a review of a new item (books or audiovisual items). These reviews are published on the library web site from time to time. Many patrons present us with funds to purchase books for our collection. This may be a memorial, a celebration of a birthday, or just a gesture of appreciation for the library’s service to the students. A bookplate is placed in the front of the book naming the donor and the person being honored or remembered. Donated books are considered, but in many cases they represent titles of which we already have copies, or may contain material ( non-fiction) that is outdated. We reserve the right to return them, or, with your O.K., to pass them on to area used-book sales such as Penn Hills Library, Oakmont Women’s Club Sale, etc.. THE LIBRARY HAS A MAJOR FUND-RAISER DURING THE YEAR: THE SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR DURING CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK IN JANUARY. OCCASIONALLY SMALL FUND-RAISERS OR USED-BOOK SALES ARE ARRANGED. WATCH OUR WEB SITE FOR THESE! Of course we are always looking for volunteer help! If you would like to help when the children have library class, that’s fine! If you have artistic ability and would like to arrange seasonal/subject material, we can work with you. If you would like to do a task that could be done any time at your convenience ( e.g. – lists of new books, repair books, etc.) that’s fine too! Just stop in and we’ll talk! Please feel free to communicate with the library as your ideas are always worthy of consideration. These are your children we are serving! Thanks a million for your support of your child’s MOST important skill – an ability to read and COMPREHEND what is read whether the subject is Math, Science, Social Studies, Religion, Language Arts, Music, Art, Physical Education---- and the lifelong pleasure of reading for fact and fun. We look forward to a good school year with your most precious possessions – your children. Mrs. Hildagarde Gray, Librarian, and the adult/student volunteer staff.
