A Message from Mrs. Schohn...

Hello!  I am very excited to have the opportunity to work with your child and look forward to a productive, enjoyable year.  I am committed to the belief that your child will receive the best education possible when we work as a team - you, myself, and your child.  I welcome your input, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, comments or concerns.  Please feel free to send a note, call the school AND leave me a message on my voicemail (#340), or my email address is schohn@stjohnthebaptistschool.org and I will get back to you as quickly as possible.

I am really looking forward to a terrific year and please remember I am available to answer any questions you or your child might have.  As always, thank you so much for all you do.

Take Care,

Mrs. Holly Schohn

Please remind your child to use best handwriting when completing all homework assignments.

Fall 2005

Subjects Taught in Room 6

Math:  Basic addition and subtraction facts, with regrouping, time, money, fractions, multiplication and division will be our primary focus this year.  Two excellent ways you can help your child succeed in Math this year are:
  1. Check that they do their homework when assigned.
  2. Spend 5-10 minutes daily on flashcard drills of the basic facts.

Spelling

Normally, we will follow a five day cycle, with the following homework schedule:

  • Monday-Write words 3X each
  • Tuesday-ABC Order
  • Wednesday-Use each word in a sentence, or complete a special writing assignment
  • Thursday- Study for test, given each Friday, unless we have a shortened week, then the whole schedule will be revised.
  • Friday - Test

Science:  We have a wonderful science program that offers a lot of opportunities for exciting hands-on learning.  We will be studying about Habitats, Finding Shelter, Moving, Sounds All Around Us, Gardening and Perfecting our Earth.  Most of the work will be done in class, aside from projects that may require time at home and studying for tests.  I will notify you in advance before these occur so that there is plenty of time to prepare. Social Studies: The major theme is Communities and we will learn a lot about them.  Again, most of this work will be done in class aside from projects and studying for tests.  A lot of group work will be done in this class, o give the children the experience in learning to work together successfully.
Health:  Learning about Health is important because your child is making more and more decisions about their own health.  Therefore, we will be studying about Healthy Communities, Feelings, Food and Health.  The Body, Caring for Teeth, Safety, Medicine and Drugs, and Physical Fitness.  Again, most of the work will be done in class, aside from projects and studying for tests.  I will notify you in advance before these occur so that there is plenty of time to prepare.  Handwriting:  We will continue to focus on perfecting our cursive style of handwriting and the children will be expected to use cursive writing, rather than printing.

Religion: We Believe

Each teacher has her own homeroom for Religion Class.  Please go over the activities at the end of each chapter.  There are many good suggestions for home activities.  Each week your child will have an Activity Sheet to complete and return as a reinforcement of things covered in the chapter.

We will also be learning new prayers this year, such as the Apostle's Creed.  Please help your child with memorizing the new prayers.

We would also suggest that each child, if they would like, to keep their own Religion Journal at home this year.  They can reflect on what he/she has learned each week.  The journal can be any type  of inexpensive notebook.

We will usually have a Religion test at the end of each chapter.
